I have spent my life terrified of money.

It was never something I had. And when I did have it, I lost it.

Money doesn’t grow on trees. We can’t afford it. I heard that growing up. Then I got married and heard it again.

I was grateful. I tried to be. But it wasn’t what I wanted.

I dreamed big. I worked hard. And still had nothing.

I used to ask myself why I wasn’t allowed to have it. What was it about me.

Two years ago I lost my business.

Not just the income. The freedom. The version of me that picked my son up from school, that was present, that had built something that felt like mine.

It failed. And it left me with debt, with jobs I didn’t want, with a life that looked nothing like the one I had been building.

My son knew one thing. Mummy closed her business.

That was all he knew. Because I decided, somewhere in the wreckage of it, that he would not feel the weight of what I was carrying. That I would smile at the dinner table. That I would keep things normal. That the fear and the shame and the relentless numbers running through my head at 3am were mine alone.

What I didn’t realise was that carrying it alone was its own kind of cost.

The guilt sat on top of everything. Guilt that I had built something and lost it. Guilt that our life had changed. Guilt that I was less present even while trying to protect him from knowing why. Guilt that I was supposed to be the one who held it together and somewhere I had let it fall apart.

And underneath the guilt was shame. The quiet, heavy kind. The kind that doesn’t announce itself. It just slowly convinces you that what happened says something true about who you are.

I believed it for longer than I want to admit.
The business failing was hard. What it did to how I saw myself was harder.

It took real work to untangle that. Not a new plan. Not positive thinking. Work at the level where the shame actually lived.

I’m building again now. From a different place entirely.

And the collapse does not get to be the last word on what I am worth.

My dad gave me £20 for every GCSE I passed.

I was told as a child that money burned a hole in my pocket.

That I couldn’t hold onto it. That I’d spend every last penny and have nothing to show for it. It was said as a joke. The kind that gets repeated at family gatherings until it becomes the story everyone tells about you, including you about yourself.

I was mocked for it. And I have sat in rooms as an adult, decades later, and heard that same story told again. Same punchline. Same laughter. Still landing in the same place in my body it always did.

Here is what nobody in that room understood.

A child who spends everything she has isn’t bad with money. She’s spending before it can be taken. Or because having it felt guilty.

The behaviour made perfect sense given what I was living in. The nervous system is always logical, even when it looks chaotic from the outside.

But what I received instead of understanding was a label. Terrible with money. Can’t be trusted. Spends every penny.

And I wore it. For years I wore it. Made it true in the way we always make our labels true, by organising our behaviour around confirming them.

That label was never mine. It was someone else’s fear, handed to a child who didn’t have the capacity to hand it back.

I’m handing it back now.

If I had endless money the first thing I would buy is a cleaner.

I tried everything.

Meditations. Solfeggio sounds for abundance. Books. Coaching. Sleep subliminals. I prayed. I cried. I lay in the sea and let myself float, trying to surrender to something bigger than the fear.

Not good enough ran through my entire life like a thread.

In relationships I was never quite the one who was chosen first. In friendships I was the useful one, the generous one, the one who showed up until I had nothing left to show up with and then discovered what some of those friendships were actually built on.

In work I built a six figure business to prove I was enough. Then watched it collapse and had to face the version of me I had been outrunning the whole time.

With money I felt the dread every single time. The tightening. The not quite believing I was allowed to have it and keep it.

In my body I spent years trying to make myself acceptable enough to deserve love.

I felt lonely in my own life.
